England used this when they beat Holland 4- 1 in Euro 96- is a good formation but not seen around much which is a shame as has a good balance of attacking and defense

good balance of attack, midfield and defense, very low on width and against teams looking for the draw can be too narrow to pierce the defense. Lack of width can be fixed by attacking fullbacks. Other big hurdle is requirement of extremely technical players with good movement, can be effective with right players but lack of space in the opponents 3rd means the attacking players need to be near perfect to make it work. Not generally seen because it is far easier to attack through the wings then through the centre.

Good formation for defending a lead as a switch from the 4-2-3-1 which is more offensive oriented

An Ancelotti favourite!

He employed this at Milan with Kaka and Seedorf behind a main striker, either Pato or Inzaghi. It was very successful in Europe, where Milan reached two Champions League finals, and with attacking full backs can over power the opposition. He now employs at Chelse where they are virtually unstoppable in the EPL, with Maloude, Anelka as the attacking midfielders behind Drogba, and has revitalized Malouda with 7 goals this season already!!

A difficult formation to combat, as he plays with a back 4, two attacking full backs providing the width, which A.Cole is highly efficient at. A holding midfeilder sheilding the back 4 (Mikel, which is their only weakness) and two central midfielders in Lampard and Essien. The control pocession through the middle and create width with attacking full backs, and typically over run a standard 4-4-2 formation, hence Chelsea s success

This game scheme was used by Andrade coach at Flamengo in the Brazilian Championship of 2009. C.R.Flamengo took the post of the champion, after a fasting period of 17 years without titles

A huge problem with every narrow formation is if the opposition have attacking fullbacks, but in this formation if the two forwards go wide while defending to mark the fullbacks and come to centre for attack tranforming from 4-3-3(in defence) to 4-3-2-1(in attack) then it can be huge advantage over other narrow formation especially 4-3-1-2.

I use this formation with my Varsity boys team. It requires a holding mid that is a real ball-winner and distributor. We always try to bring one of our fullbacks into the attack to create width.

I would say that our striker (as listed above) plays much more as a center forward with his back to goal. The 2 attacking mids make runs off of him. This usually puts the opposition at a numerical disadvantage through the middle unless the defense is clever. Has worked very well for us!

I play this with my U12 s. We are not a big or strong team, but we do have skill and can possess the ball decently. I don t have any true goal scorers and struggle to score even with three forwards. However, changing from 3 in the back to 4 in the back has dramatically changed my team. In 6 games, we have 4 shutouts.

Here s my take on it...

4 backs - you want speed on the outside so they can push up to get involved in the offense by supporting the midfielders, yet track back quickly to defend. My two center backs are more physical, tackle well, and can distribute.

3 defense midfielders - the outside MF s need to be fit as they are responsible for providing width offensively, yet also track back quickly. The CM is more of a defensive CM who needs good skill but must have better vision and be a great distributor of the ball.

2 attacking midfielders - I tell my two AM s that they are the likely goal scorers. They make runs off the lone striker. The challenge with these two is they must play sideline to sideline and push forward to mark the opposition when they are building out of the back.

1 lone strike - plays with his back to the goal. I know he s tempted to make runs forward but 1 forward can t beat 3 defenders. Therefore, his objective is to hold the ball up and play the AM s our outside DM s. Must also work tirelessly to pressure on defense.

I find this formation suitable for the young players building them to be tactical and disciplined.I have applied this formation and a style of play possessing more and sharp movement using the fullback to attack, the very skillful 2 forward and a sharp striker and i had a stunning results on our state league. Kitayosce has won the league without losing a single game on Kilimanjaro Under 15 league. The benefits i have with this formation is having 7 man wall defensive wall when defending, having 5 midfielder while possessing at the centre and having 3 forwards supported with fullback to make 5 man attacking.
The transition between defending, possessing and attacking is very crucial and it needs very clever players to make creative passes than casual passing.
