sweeper is obsolete in high end competition

5-4-1 could be called 1-4-4-1 as the sweeper plays behind the back 4, so essentially it is 4-4-2 with one striker sacrificed to add a last line of defence.

Old-fashioned formation used by Rehagel vs Sweden in the Euro 2008. Backfired after Sweden scored.

only problem playing a sweeper is offsides and more teams now like a defensive midfielder who breaks play up and protects the back 4

With a pair of athletic wingbacks it can mold itself into a faux 3-4-3 at times.

Played by Senegal in the opening match of the 2002 world cup. Congested the midfield and the back. I am guessing this formation can be also called Parking the bus in front of the goal mouth.whistle

My daughter s coach ,not real experinced, uses this formation during what he considers when playing against a powerhouse team. This is a high school the team with the majority of the team travel players for years. What is the history of this 5-4-1 formation and how successful is it because the coach keeps refering to it. Did this formation ever win a reconized tournament. The girls hate it.

This is obviously a defensive formation- utilized to gain draws or frustrate the other side and eventually force an error. The highlight is that with marking duties shared between the wing mid and the outside back regarding the opponents wing mid, it allows the defensive weak side mid to check off his mark to the back behind him and literally make runs both diagonally and horizontally. A back line of 5 can actually lead to more flexibility....

Context sensitive formation

I get my lads to line out in a 5-2-3 formation like this - SW LCB RCB LWB RWB - DM CM - LWF RWF CF

With this formations I change to a 7-2-1 system when defending.. 6 Marking in the back-line with a free player.. Usually the sweeper. Two Wide forwards drop back into middle third of the defensive half. With a center forward up top.

When Attacking I use a 3-3-4 system.. Two Center Backs covering opp. strikers plus the Sweeper as a spare man.. Def Mid and Wing Backs make up the middle third of the attacking half.. Giving the attackers exit options and waiting to disrupt and slow down opp. breaks. A Box to Box midfielder on the edge of the 18 yd box in front of the Def Midfielder. A pair of Wide Forwards making diagonal runs into the box.. Then a Center Forward up top..

Simple..
The key is to be flexible and have fit and disciplined players.

This formation works well if you have a strong centre back that can dribble the ball a bit and likes to pick out a pass. Someone like David Luiz that likes to add that extra dimension to the midfield without leaving only one centre back to deal with the counter if one occurs. Also if one fullback goes the other stays and it becomes a 4-5-1 with the CB on that side moving across to play FB. This only works if you have the players to do so. Very solid defensive base & if you have 2 quick wingers that can get up to support your ST then it can also be a very attacking formation.

Certainly not negative and do not just think your coach is being negative or protecting against the loss as they are probably boxing clever and you will be surprised by the results if you embrace it!

This system was used by Italy in 1982. Used by Zimbabwe in 2014 chan in South Africa. Zimbabwe consindered 3 goal only. Its a real parking lot.

Costa Rica call theirs a 5-2-3, with the outside midfielders joining the attack. Seems to be working pretty well for them so far, certainly they haven t been shy about pressing forwards....

We use this and the players love it,it gives them confidence at the back .we have players who can defend and bring the ball out of defence and supply the midfield. These can park the bus if we need to but with two agile wingbacks we can quickly change to attack. The central defenders can push up into midfield if need be to push the midfield up the field who in turn support the attack.
The all team need to be prepared to work hard when need be and be flexable

a very defensive oriented soccer formation. But if the wing backs fail to cover ground after they ve lost possession during an attack, the system collapses and many goals conceded

I wouldn’t run a sweeper. Think three CBs and two defensive minded wings. Basically a defensive variant of the 5-3-2 but with 4 mids instead of three and a single striker up top.
