The Leeds old boys inside Arsenal's title machine
Leeds United visit the Emirates Stadium on October 10, and they will find two of their own in the home dressing room. Anyone weighing up the Arsenal vs Leeds United betting odds is pricing the champions of England. The route from Elland Road to north London is older and busier than most people realise, and it runs through the goalkeeper's jersey.
Two Arsenal keepers who started at Leeds
John Lukic signed for Leeds as a schoolboy in 1975 and made 146 appearances before Arsenal bought him in 1983 to succeed Pat Jennings. He played every minute of the 1988-89 season and was in goal at Anfield when Arsenal won the title in the final seconds. He then went back to Leeds and won another championship in 1991-92, making him a rare title winner with both clubs.
David Seaman's Leeds spell was shorter and crueller. A supporter of the club as a boy, he joined the academy in 1981 and turned professional as second choice to Lukic, only for manager Eddie Gray to release him without a senior appearance. He left for Peterborough United for £4,000 in 1982 and returned to win three league titles and four FA Cups at Arsenal, playing in goal more often than anyone in the club's history.
The current pair
Illan Meslier joined Arsenal on a free transfer in July 2026 after seven years at Leeds, where he made 215 appearances and won two Championship titles. He is third choice behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, which is exactly the job Seaman once had in Yorkshire.
Ben White did not begin at Leeds, but Leeds is where he was made. On loan from Brighton in 2019-20, he played all 46 league games as Marcelo Bielsa's side went up as champions on 93 points. He won the club's Young Player of the Season award and made the PFA Championship team of the year. Arsenal paid Brighton £50m for him in 2021. Meslier, on loan from Lorient, was in that same promotion squad.
The dead ball gap between the two sides
Arsenal did not score a single direct free kick in the whole of 2025-26. Rice took five and none of them went in. For a team that turns every other restart into a chance, that is one part of the football odds where they hold no edge at all.
Leeds, by contrast, scored three direct free kicks last season, all of them struck by Anton Stach.
What October 10 looks like
The sides last met in August 2025 and Arsenal won 5-0, with both of Jurrien Timber's goals arriving from Rice corners. Nothing structural has changed since. Rice and Saka still take them, Gabriel still attacks the first ball.
Leeds arrive unbeaten after five matches of 2026-27, with nine points and only three goals conceded. Arsenal sit second on 12 points after a 3-0 defeat at Brighton. Two men who learned their trade in West Yorkshire will be watching from the other side, and both know precisely how dangerous the first corner is going to be.
