Hit for nine! Remembering the biggest wins in recent Premier League history
The development of the modern game has seen offensive quality grow almost exponentially, which has resulted in some high-scoring games in recent times. This can come in the form of an absolute thrashing of an opponent, as seen in Liverpool’s record-breaking win over rivals Manchester United on 5 March. With that 7-0 victory in mind, here is a look back at the biggest wins in recent Premier League history.
Southampton 0-9 Leicester City - 25 October 2019
Having never won a Premier League match on a Friday, Leicester ended that drought in emphatic style early in the 2019-20 season. Goals from Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans, Jamie Vardy and a brace from Ayoze Perez gave the Foxes an unassailable 5-0 lead at the break, with many Saints fans heading for the exits as coach Ralph Hasenhuttl watched on in despair.
In the end, it seems that those that did depart probably made the right choice. Perez completed his hat-trick shortly after the break shortly before Vardy made it seven. James Maddison got in on the action late on while Vardy scored a last-gasp penalty, with Leicester boasting two hat-trick scorers in the same match since Arsenal in 2003 – which also came against Saints. The result was the biggest away victory in English top-flight history.

Manchester United 9-0 Southampton - 2 February 2021
Unfortunately for Southampton fans, their side were mauled by the same scoreline barely a year-and-a-half later at Old Trafford. Incredibly, United boasted eight different scorers that day, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Dan James adding to a Yan Bednarek own-goal to seal the win.
As well as an increase in goals in the modern game, information and data available to the average consumer is at an all-time high. Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth - 27 August 2022
With three 9-0 scorelines in the past three seasons, it might be worth wagering on that same eventuality next campaign. Liverpool made it three from three with their routing of Bournemouth early on this term, in such a low moment for the Cherries that they ended up sacking manager Scott Parker after just four Premier League games in charge.
On the day, two early goals from Harvey Elliot and Luis Diaz set the tone at Anfield, before Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil Van Dijk made it 5-0 before the break. A Chris Mepham own-goal made it six shortly after, with second strikes for Diaz and Firmino and a first Liverpool goal for Fabio Carvalho rounding out the 9-0 thumping. It remains the Reds’ joint-biggest win in their history.

With goals seemingly on the increase, it appears likely that there will be a few more thrashings before the end of the season. While the Premier League’s record of a 9-0 thumping is yet to be beaten, the league’s first ever ten-goal haul may not be too far away.
