under certain circumstances, 4-3-1-2 could be offensively modified into 3-4-1-2 by bringing one wingback into wing midfield position.

jose pekerman did it with Argentina national team in 06 WC

With this formation you suppply much needed defensive suppo\\rt with the two defensive centre midfielders and cover the flanks with the wingers to deliver a good cross. This formation was used by Saltus Grammar school 2006-2007 season. They won the league that year in over thirteens and reached the semifinals but in under 13 they won the cup and came second in the league. This formation only works if at least one of the centre midfielders is like the sweeper of the midfield and stays deeper than the other midfielders.

this is what Roma under Capello used. 3-4-1-2 can change into 5-3-2 while defending with 2 winger become full back. this formation requires winger with good stamina (example: Cafu and candela when they were in Roma) and great playmaker as attacking midfield(Totti). this formation is good if you want to play counter attack

This is a system that many teams from the former Yugoslavia used to use. Croatia used it at the 2006 World Cup. The 1 is the playmaker, who is held in high regard in the Balkans. Not as effective in recent times, but like a previous comment - good for counter-attacking football. Wingers in this formation are absolutely crucial for success

A solid formation which however can come under real pressure against a team using 4 at the back and pushing their fullbacks on to support their wingers. The lone wingback in the 3-4-1-2 comes under heavy pressure and the rest of the midfield must reshuffle to support otherwise things go wrong.

However, a good formation to plug and play with. Each players role is simply defined and easily picked up.

System was used during the 2002 World Cup by Brazil (Luiz Felipe Scolari - coach) effectively with Cafu and Roberto Carlos as the right/left wingers, whilst Ronaldinho was in behind Rivaldo and Ronaldo. This system works well if you have only one outright playmaker. Problems occur when you have to fit players such as Kaka and Ronaldinho into the one spot. The agony choice for Brazil.

this is the best tactic but there is the neeed of a defender midfielder so he helps the wings survuve to quick counter atacks

One thing no one mentioned is the qualities of the 3 defenders- the 2 on the outside(L & R) must be comfortable in wide areas, while the central defender should be good with the ball at his feet and willing to bring it forward, if needed(almost playing as a sweeper).

I use 3-4-1-2 with CF as playmaker. one CM becomes more defensive other a little offensive and three standard CBs. CF placed little leftwards so that right offensive CM can make forward runs in attack.

Just starting to experiment with this formation as a quick adjustment from my 4-2-3-1. Very simple transition. Midfield retains its shape, 1 defender is replaced by an extra striker and those lines adjust shape. Works incredibly well with a true playmaker and 2 central mids who can both function as ball winner and deep-lying playmaker. 3 defenders must be fast and technically sound. When making the transition between formations I actually pull both my center backs off and play with my top 3 wing-backs in defense.

Fatih Terim s system. Galatasaray used it at the 2000 UEFA Cup. he 1999–2000 UEFA Cup season was won by Galatasaray, who defeated Arsenal in the final.

A great formation against narrow teams, in some ways it s closer to a 343 then a 352. The midfield duo is usually tasked defensive roles, with the wingbacks providing the width the formation really lacks. A single offensive midfielder supports the strikers, but looks to track back into midfield should the possession be lost.

As already mentioned, wingbacks are crucial to this formation. They really have to be fast, durable and well at crossing, passing as well as defending. With the prevailance of speed and formations with fullbacks overloading the flanks these days, finding wingbacks fit and fast enough is extremely hard.

The obvious trick to defeat this formation is creating 2v1 situations on the flanks, but it isn t the only one, packing the midfield to devoid the team of possession forces the wingbacks to drop deep between the midfield and the defense, creating a 5212, and providing tons of space in the midfield for the opposition to build their attacks.

Sampaoli used this with Chile to beat Spain at the 2014 World Cup. He instructed Silva, the central cb, to push up into an almost dcm position if the build up was stagnant or not vertical enough. This formation is perfect for defending against a 4-3-3 team like Spain that relies heavily on their sole dcm to build up play which was Busquets job here. It s a good high press, man marking type of formation especially against a 4-3-3.

Isla the rwb was instructed to make inverted runs while Vargas, the st on that side tried dragging Martinez the rcb out by drifting into the right half space maybe even as far as the right wing space. Sanchez, the other st, dropped to receive which allowed Vidal, the cam, to run in behind Ramos the lcb who was tight to Sanchez. Chile played some good counter attacking football with this formation and one of their goals was definitely a counter attack goal but I m not sure about the other. This formation also works against teams like barca too.

A weakness in this formation is the space that s left either side of the cam. If you drop another cm alongside your dcm and form a double pivot either side of the cam it could work.
