World Cup 2026 is set to be one of the most exciting tournaments in years, with an expanded format seeing even more action. Argentina will be hopeful of defending their title, with Lionel Scaloni continuing as boss and all set to add to his tally of 7 games in charge at a World Cup.
Spain is the current 9/2 favourite to lift the World Cup next year among the best UK mobile betting apps . England and France are next at 13/2, while South American duo Brazil and Argentina are next in the betting at 8/1 and 10/1 respectively.
The tournament will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and has the potential for one coach to create a new record for the number of games coached at the World Cup.
Helmut Schön’s 25 Matches; Parreira and Scolari Just Behind
A lot can happen in 4 years, and this gap between World Cup tournaments can often result in managerial departures. Because of this, the highest number of games managed at World Cup tournaments is just 25.
This record is held by Helmut Schön, who managed West Germany from 1964 to 1978. During this time, he won the 1972 and 1976 European Championships, as well as the 1974 World Cup, one of the most dominant periods for German football.
With 23 appearances as a manager, Carlos Alberto Parreira of Brazil is in second place, with fellow Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari next on the list with 21 appearances.
Didier Deschamps - 19 Appearances
Didier Deschamps is one of the most decorated players and managers in history, having won leagues and Champions Leagues in France with Marseille and Italy with Juventus. The industrious midfielder was also the captain of France when they won the 1998 World Cup on home soil and the 2000 European Championship.
In 2018, Deschamps managed the French national team to World Cup glory and was narrowly defeated by Argentina in the final of the 2022 tournament. If France makes it to the final of the 2026 tournament, Deschamps will edge ahead of Schön, but at 57, he said he will step down after the 2026 tournament.
Zlatko Dalić - 14 Appearances
Zlatko Dalić has managed Croatia since 2017, leading the club to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals. Croatia has consistently produced world-class players, and for a country with a population of under 4 million, it rivals Uruguay in terms of punching above its weight.
Dalić's Croatia side finished as the 2018 runner-up and finished third in 2022, and the side currently leads Group L in the World Cup qualifiers, having won 5 of their 6 games, including a 7-0 win against minnows Gibraltar.
While the side has a strong recent history at the World Cup, betting operators put them alongside Japan and Denmark as 100/1 outsiders.
Lionel Scaloni - 7 Appearances
Lionel Scaloni took over as Argentina manager after Jorge Sampaoli stepped down following the 2018 Russian World Cup. They finished second in their group behind Croatia and were defeated 4-3 by France in the first knockout round of 16.
Scaloni, who spent the majority of his career at Deportivo, made 7 appearances for Argentina during his playing days. He was a victim of circumstance as a right back and right midfielder at a time when Javier Zanetti played the same position and made 145 international appearances.
He has managed 91 games for Argentina, winning 64 for a 70.33% win percentage. This impressive performance has helped him lead the team to the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, and a 2022 World Cup win over Didier Deschamps's France in the final.
Scaloni is just 47 and is another manager with the potential to feature in future World Cup tournaments.
As the countdown to World Cup 2026 continues, the stage is set not only for the world’s best players but also for the next generation of coaching legends. With the tournament’s expanded format and global stage across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, managers will have more opportunities than ever to build their legacy.
